The Bouma Sequence

The Bouma Sequence.

The bouma sequence is named after A.H.Bouma, is a primary tool for facies representation. This sequence has been divided into 5 parts or beds. These divisions are made according to the Turbidity currents.

The divisions are from A to E.
Where
A- has sand sized grains which are graded gravel at the bottom. They mostly have massive sandstone. Generally devoid of primary structures.
B- this layer consists of parallel laminations which are of sandy nature.
C- consists of cross laminations also consists of ripple marks.
D- this layer consists of laminated silts.
E- hemipelagic mud.

As we do down from E to A there is an increase in energy level.
The below image shows a full Bouma sequence.
